About this tool

How the Post Visualizer works

This is an interactive world map of U.S. embassies and consulates. Color the map by cost of living allowance, hardship differential or danger pay, and switch on travel advisories to see where they apply. Click a post to open its details.

What you can do

  • Choose a measure (COLA, hardship or danger pay) and set a minimum to hide posts below it.
  • Show embassies, consulates or both.
  • Click a post to see its allowances, per diem rates, education allowances by grade, and country facts.
  • Follow the link to the full travel advisory on travel.state.gov.

What each post shows

Allowance percentages come first, then per diem by season and education allowances at post and away. Below them are population, currency and exchange rate, plus facts on government, geography, time difference, the U.S. mission, health and security.

Where the numbers come from

  • The State Department's post allowance and per diem tables, and its travel advisories.
  • The CIA World Factbook (2025) for country facts.
  • The REST Countries service for currency details, and an exchange rate service for the rate shown.
  • A "Most recent update" date in the tool shows when the allowance data was last refreshed.

What it leaves out

The country facts describe the country, not daily life at a particular post. There's nothing here about housing, schools or the quality of a post's health care. Use the map to narrow a list, then research the posts that remain.

Common questions

How is this different from the Salary Calculator?

The map shows the allowance percentages for each post. The Salary Calculator turns them into dollars for your grade and step.

Is the travel advisory current?

The tool shows the advisory level it last read and links to travel.state.gov for the full text. Check there before you travel.

Why does the tool work best full screen?

The map and the post panel need room. On a phone, use the menu to choose a measure.
